Peanut exposure prior to age one may reduce the incidence of peanut allergy. In countries with western diets there is a growing incidence of allergic diseases.
In 2000, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that peanuts should be avoided prior to age 3. Unexpectedly though, the incidence of peanut allergy more than doubled from 2000 to 2008.
A randomized, controlled study was conducted in the U K. It involved 640 high risk infants (with severe eczema and egg allergy) that were given peanuts in their diet at age 4-11 months. The incidence of peanut allergy was reduced by 80%. The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends peanuts to be started early in the diet of high risk infants.
